The meeting had already degenerated a lot from actual ideas about how to handle the budget, but this was... something else.

Other Things That Floor Us
Other things that floor us include our insurance guy, John Bailey, calling at yesterday's school budget meeting for the return of God to the classroom as a means of improving discipline and apparently academics, in the form of an initiative to put a King James Bible in the hand of each student in Dryden, "no matter what the law says." He also recommends teaching creationism, since we're already teaching "the religion of evolution." This is a discussion John and I have had before, but Paul was astonished.

In an increasingly complex and seemingly insane world where the tools for understanding and education are being dismantled, this reaction is understandable and will no doubt increase.
It's fair to say that two or more board members are quite sympatico with John on this topic. I am not convinced that the world is that much more insane than the duck-and-cover world of our childhood, and I absolutely remember the humiliation at being called on in class and asked whether I'd attended Sunday School that week. It just all feels so old to me; can't we argue about something new? Does it always have to be evolution and birth control?
The good news is that this exchange convinced Paul to run for the board again. I don't remember if this will be the fifth or sixth time....
I hope that's good news....
